“The lyrical content as we sing out to The Lord is what is important, not the notes. The particular instruments, tempo, and decibel level are not important to Him.” (Quote by Derek Jones)
How do you arrive at this conclusion, Derek? It is not arrived at by reading 2 Samuel 6:5. This is a very dangerous presumption, a slippery slope and lacks spiritual discernment and Biblical authority.
Indeed, it is clear that David was a man after God’s own heart. God’s word emphasizes that He desires the whole heart of a man. In many places He says to this effect, ‘I am looking for a heart completely mine’ (Jeremiah 29; 2 Chronicles 16). Additionally, the true seeker after God has the whole heart invested in the search until death. God isn’t impressed with our noise. He is moved at our fear of Him (Isaiah 66:2) and our longing and desire for Him. Hence, this is why David was God’s man – David’s heart was moved by God Himself, not music or any other thing, and David’s heart bent low in fear at His Holy presence. David honored God by silencing his heart, his mouth and his noise.
Listen! The prophet says in Habakkuk 2 “But the Lord is in His holy temple: let all the earth keep silence before Him.” The early church of Acts was not characterized by loudness of music but by the Fear of the Lord. In Acts chapters 2 and 5 we can read of the kind of fear and reverence that bore witness to the God that walked amongst them. If there was any noise sounded abroad from the worshipping Acts church it was by the Holy Ghost falling upon them.
We know a constant beat in music causes restraint to be cast off (see http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EoBfpP4pMRk ). This contemporary ‘christian’ music craze has also derailed many to fall from grace and from walking with the Lord. See this link for details on how Christian music transforms churches (emplacing this link her does not endorse the whole ministries website): http://www.wayoflife.org/database/how_contemporary_praise_transforms_churches.html . Here is also some puzzling uprisings in this 'christian' market: http://www.breathecast.com/articles/illuminati-imagery-infiltrating-the-christian-music-industry-leaving-fans-confused-as-to-what-message-is-being-preached-14514/ . What does it all mean? "There is no fear of God before their eyes."
Derek, you write: “The song is how we express our heart of worship.” True. The song one sings reflects the heart of the singer, whether it be bad or whether it be good. Jesus says in Mark chapter 7, “Howbeit in vain do they worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men,” and, “For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed evil thoughts, adulteries, fornications, murders, thefts, covetousness, wickedness, deceit, lasciviousness, an evil eye, blasphemy, pride, foolishness: all these evil things come from within and defile the man.”
All of men’s hearts are laid bare before the Lord. He sees the condition of each one’s heart: Lecrae, Blind, Newboys, Colton Dixon, Derek Minor and Nick Hall – all of these ‘artists’ play their crafts before the Lord. Can any of us know for certain if they play a good tune or bad? Can one snapshot in the lives of any of these ‘artists’ tell us implicitly what their heart is made of, whether it be bad or whether it be good? To answer that I can only refer to scripture in two places: 1) “for the Lord seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the Lord looketh on the heart” (1 Samuel 16) and 2) “Judge not according to the appearance, but judge righteous judgment” (John 7). Piggyback this John 7 passage with Matthew 7:1-5 passage that speaks on how someone can come to judge righteously. Just because something looks good or feels good doesn’t mean it is good.
I have seen terrible things by the hands of these workers of iniquity (some of the artists named above). See this video about Lecrae: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qp21EqoZH9s (The Art of the Heart | 611 Ashamed). I have listened to Nick Hall’s ‘preaching’ and have found him wanting. He preaches none of the counsel of God but preaches what the world wants him to preach and what the crowd cheers for him to preach. Nick Hall does not testify to the crowd at WinterJam that their deeds are evil and so the crowd loves him. Jesus said, ‘The world cannot hate you; but me it hateth, because I testify of it, that the works thereof are evil.’
“To the law and to the testimony: if they speak not according to this word, it is because there is no light in them” (Isaiah 8).
Don’t say to me, Derek, that all that go to this concert are Christians already. You might readily suggest this. You say: “Church, the Gospel is the same in churches (then you give a long list of many churches and denominations)…it doesn’t matter…it doesn’t matter (you say a couple times).” This is troubling for me to read, Derek and shows no discernment on your part. “Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits and doctrines of devils; speaking lies in hypocrisy; having their consciences seared with a hot iron…” (1 Timothy 4). Jesus says, “And many false prophets shall rise, and shall deceive many. And because iniquity shall abound, the love of many shall wax cold” (Matthew 24:11-12). The scriptures are ripe with warnings and prophecies of the days we are in. Please Read 2 Thessalonians 2:7-12. And lastly in 2 Timothy chapter 3:13 "But evil men and seducers shall wax worse and worse..."
Derek, I write these things for a warning and with sincere Christian love that you be not deceived. There are prophets and pastors that are in the land not sent by God. Beware that you be not of that number. Flee from them and do not partake in their deeds nor in the great deception that is upon this land. Rather, “For ye know what commandments we gave you by the Lord Jesus. For this is the will of God, even your sanctification, that ye should abstain from fornication: that every one of you should know how to possess his vessel in sanctification and honor; nor in the lust of concupiscence, even as the Gentiles which know not God” (1 Thessalonians 4:2-5).
The majority of these people that make money for music are not saved. They worship their own fancies, vanities and worldly lusts. They make money, sell and make a lie. They trumpet a jesus that cannot save a flea and a gospel that cannot save anybody for eternity. They preach a jesus that welcomes a sinner without saving them from their sin (Matthew 1:21). Did David make a living off of singing? No, he cast out devils with his harps. Did David get a commission every time someone sang one of his psalms – No, he poured them out before the Lord, worshipping in spirit and in truth where rust cannot corrupt nor thieves enter and steal.
Derek, take these as admonitions. Look at the video ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=On9zTgXTsSE ) I posted on your fb page of Zac Poonen, an elder in the faith, and glean wisdom from this dear man. How dare we shrug away the admonitions of an elder in the faith? He said those things by the Spirit of God. I write these things, not because I am so ‘elderly’ or wise. No, I write these things because so many are deceived and going to hell. Don’t be counted in with the deceived number, “for many therein go.” The issue of music is not a matter of personal opinion or taste. It is a matter of “did God really say” (See Genesis 3:1)?
Let me end on this note: In the New Testament we have frequent admonitions to walk worthy of Christ, to walk soberly and righteously, to Take Heed, Watch unto prayer, Gird up the loins of our minds, test all things etc. But what about soberness? It has been thrown out the window these days. But if you look at all the New Testament you will see that this carefulness and soberness characterizes those truly touched by the Holy Ghost. Titus 2:11-15 says, “For the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men, teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world; looking for that blessed hope, and glorious appearing of the great God and Saviour Jesus Christ; who gave Himself for us, that He might redeem us from all iniquity, and purify unto Himself a peculiar people, zealous of good works. These things speak and exhort, and rebuke with all authority. Let no man despise thee.”
“For our God is a consuming fire.” Hebrews 12
“Can two walk together, except they be agreed?” Amos 3

"I have read your blog and I appreciate your heart. All I know is I watched people turn in repulsion at your street preaching, and yet I see lives transformed by the love they are shown and the truth of the gospel that is proclaimed when they come see us. I am not condemning your practice, but please don't condemn ours. I love you brother and pray that your ministry will be fruitful for the glory of the Father in the name of the Son by the power of the Spirit. I hope you will pray the same with me. I answer to God and seek His counsel on all we do, and find His favor for walking true to the call He has placed on my life. I love you, Brother."
